Friday's Khotbah: The Truth of Faith

THE FIRST KHOTBAH

Indeed all praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, we seek His aid,

we seek His forgiveness and we repent to Him.

And we seek refuge with Allah from the evils of our souls and the mischief of our deeds,

Whoever He guides then there is none to lead him astray

and whomever He misleads, then there is no guide for him.

I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah alone, no partner has He,

and I bear witness that Muhammad is His worshiper and His Messenger, His closest man, the most beloved to Him,

the trustworthy on conveying His message and the conveyor of His religion to mankind.

There is no good except that he had explained it to his ummah

and there is no bad except that he had warned them from it.

May Allah confer His peace and salutation upon him, his family and all of his companions.

Amma ba'du, O the believers, the worshipers of Allah, fear Allah Ta'ala,

indeed, whoever fears of Allah, will be saved and guided to the good of his world and religion.

Taqwa (Fear of Allah) is doing obedience to Allah upon the light (knowledge) from Allah

to wish reward from Allah and avoiding disobedience to Allah

upon the light (knowledge) from Allah to avoid the punishment of Allah.

Faith is the Greatest Command in Islam

O the believers, indeed, the greatest command and the most exalted one,  the highest goal and the noblest one,

is iman (faith) in Allah and in everything which He, the Exalted and the High, has commanded His slaves to believe.

Allah says (which means), "Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, ...

"... but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, ...

...  the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, ...

... the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer ...

... (and gives zakah); [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient ...

...  in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true (in their faith), ...

... and it is those who are the righteous. "  (QS Al Baqarah: 177)

O believers, the servants of Allah,  only by faith, the noble wishes are achieved,

only by faith, high degrees and stations are obtained,

and faith is the only means of salvation for a slave from the Hellfire and the anger of Allah, the Compeller.

And only by faith, a slave can attain a great triumph which is Paradise

and pleasure in seeing the face of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Exalted in Dignity.

Faith is the Greatest Duty among Duties in Islam

O the believers, indeed, the greatest duty among the duties obliged upon a slave in his life

is knowing the matter of faith and living by it,

indeed, if a slave is to be born in this world then he is to leave it without acquiring faith,

he certainly will leave this world without having to taste the most satisfying matter in it,

and therefore he will miss the most valuable possession of the world  and its most delightful sweetness,

and will lose the reward of the Hereafter and its recompense,

O the slaves of Allah, therefore, it is our obligation to always attend to the matter of faith

with full attention by both knowing and practicing it and understanding and realizing it,

O the believers, faith is not only merely wishful thinking nor oral claims.

The matter of eeman (faith) is not only wishful thinking nor physical appearance,

but faith also is a belief within the heart which is attested by actions (of body parts).

Faith is both Utterance and Actions

O the slaves of Allah, it is true that faith is both utterance and actions.

Aqeedah (Creed) or eeman (faith) is both utterance and actions.  It includes aqeedah and shareeah (Islamic law),

seriousness and assiduousness, patience and endurance,

sacrifice and attention, guidance and self-assurance,

and practicing good deeds upon obedience to the Lord, the ever Exalted and Grand, and seeking His approval.

O the believers, the starting point of faith and its beginning is the goodness placed in the heart of a believer

by believing in Allah and in everything that Allah commands His slaves to believe,

whole parts of the body will grow upon goodness and they will be consistent in the obedience of Allah,

guided by His guidance as it is said by the Prophet  shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam,

"Beware, in the body, there is a piece of flesh; if it is sound, ...

...  the whole body is sound and if it is corrupt the whole body is corrupt, ...

... and hearken it is the heart." (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

O the believers, faith is not only merely a belief within a heart,

but it also requires oral saying and practical acts and therefore the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

"Faith has more over seventy branches, the most excellent of which is proclaiming laa ilaha illallah ...

...  and the humblest of which is removing what is injurious from a path; and modesty. ...

...   is a branch among the branches of faith." (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

This noble hadith gives us an understanding

that some branches of faith are in the heart, some are in the tongue, and some are in the body parts.

Faith is Increasing by Obedience

The branches are plentiful, the deeds are various, and the degrees are graded.

Whenever one of those branches increases within a slave, henceforth his faith increases,

his degree is upgraded, and the reward becomes greater in the sight of Allah but whenever one of those decreases,

hence his faith decreases according to his decrease in the branch of faith.

O the believers, because of that we should know that indeed every form of obedience

and every kind of worship by which we draw nearer to Allah is a branch of faith.

Salah (prayer) is a part of faith, performing Hajj (pilgrimage) is a part of faith, giving Zakah (obligatory alms) is a part of faith,

doing good to parents is a part of faith, joining kin relationship is a part of faith,

and every deed of obedience used to draw nearer to Allah, the Entirely Merciful, belongs to

belongs to parts of faith and branches of it

which increases through their increase and decreases through their decrease as well.

O the believers, as faith consists of deeds and obedience used to draw nearer to Allah,

at the same time, O the believers, there are some ways that ِAllah 'azza wa jalla forbids

and prohibits His slaves from so. And because of that, it is our duty to know

how to refrain from disobedience, keep away from sins, and avoid committing errors,

all of those qualities, O the slaves of Allah, are parts of faith.

Because of that, the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

"The fornicator who fornicates is not a believer so long as he commits it ...

...  and no thief who steals is a believer as long as he commits theft, ...

... and no drunkard who drinks wine is a believer as long as he drinks it." (Narrated by Abu Dawud)

Faith is Decreasing by Disobedience

The Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam wanted to denote by that hadith that disobedience

decreases someone's faith and weaken his religion, hence whosoever wants to maintain his faith

and conserve his religion, he must refrain from any kind of disobedience during his life

and any mischief which may evoke the anger of Allah, Blessed and High is He,

"If you avoid the major sins which you are forbidden, ...

...  We will remove from you your lesser sins and admit you to a noble entrance [into Paradise]." (An Nisa: 31)

O company of slaves, the greatest matter to which a slave of Allah must attend

is protecting his faith from being perished and damaged because factors that cause it to perish are numerous

and matters which lead to heedlessness are plentiful. Moreover, nowadays, how plentiful they are.

Because of that, a slave who believes extremely needs to be very cautious

from everything which may direct him away from the faith and distance him from the religion of Allah, Blessed and High is He.

Supplicating to be Steadfast upon Faith

it is mentioned in Shahih that Sufyan bin Abdillah Ats Tsaqafi -May Allah be pleased with him-

once asked the Prophet Shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam and said,

"Inform me about Islam a thing which might dispense with the necessity of my asking anybody after you."

The Prophet said, "Say: I affirm my faith in Allah and then remain steadfast to it." (Narrated by Muslim)

That is to say steadfast in obedience to Allah.

Maintain with care your worship to Allah, hope reward when obeying the commands from Allah

untill the time when Allah takes you in death while you remain upon that state.

"O you who have believed, fear Allah as He should be feared ...

...   and do not die except as Muslims [in submission to Him]. " (Ali Imran: 102)

I finish my talk here and I ask forgiveness for myself, all of you, and all of Muslims from every sin.

Ask Him forgiveness and He certainly will forgive you, indeed, He is Forgiving and Merciful.

THE SECOND KHOTBAH

I praise Allah with plenty of praise and I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah alone,

no partner has He. And I also bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His messenger.

May Allah always deliver His peace and salutation upon him, his family, and all of his companions.

Amma ba'du, O who have believed, fear Allah 'azza wa jalla

and be aware that He is always spotting when you are alone or in public,

when you are unseen by people or seen by them with the awareness that

makes someone is fully conscious that indeed Allah is ever hearing him and seeing him.

True Faith is like a Strong and Blessed Tree

O who have believed, indeed faith is (like) a blessed tree whose root is firmly fixed and trunk highly mounts

and which produces a lot of fruit. "Have you not considered how Allah presents an example,  ...

...  [making] a good word like a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed and its branches [high] in the sky?  ...

...  It produces its fruit all the time, by permission of its Lord. ...

... And Allah presents examples for the people that perhaps they will be reminded." (Abraham: 24-25)

That is the example, O you who have believed, that Allah presents for His slaves

in order that they understand through the example the truth of faith and henceforth they make effort to maintain with care their faith,

protect its root by strengthening the creed and reinforcing the religion

by strengthening the creed and reinforcing the religion and belief in Allah and in everything that Allah commands His slaves to believe,

that are fixed basis of faith and core believes as mentioned in a hadith

(When someone asked,) "Inform me about faith." The Prophet replied, "That you affirm your faith in Allah,  ...

... His angels, His books, His apostles, the Day of Judgment, ...

and you affirm your faith in the Divine Decree about good and evil. (Narrated by Muslim)

And after that, a slave who affirms faith in Allah must attend with care to branches of faith which are obedience, good deeds,

various kinds of holy worship, and many other things through which he comes closer to Allah 'azza wa jalla.

And as weeds or wild plants which grow under a tree, (for example) they surround a date palm tree,

such existence will affect and harm the tree if they are not cleaned away.

And indeed, O the slaves of Allah, disobedience greatly affects the tree of faith,

weakens the faith, causes it to damage, and decreases it, hence a slave of Allah who has believed

must maintain his faith by strengthening his creed, improving upon his worship and deeds,

and refrain from committing sins and misdeeds. And the early scholar (As Salaf As Shaleh) once said,

"Faith is utterance by the tongue, belief by the heart, actions by the body parts, and it increases by obedience and decreases by disobedience."

CLOSING SUPPLICATION

May Allah beautify all of us with the adornment of faith, amend our religion which is the safeguard of my affairs,

and guide all of us to Him through the straight path.

Ask [Allah to confer] His blessing and ask [Him to grant] peace -May Allah protect you-

upon the Prophet Muhammad bin Abdillah, as Allah commands you to do so, as mentioned in His Book. He says (which means),

" Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ...

... ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace." (QS Al Ahzab: 56)

And The Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam also said, "He who asks (Allah to confer upon) me once, ...

... Allah would bless him ten times." (Narrated Muslim)

O Allah, bless Muhammad and the members of his household

as You did bless the members of Abraham's household.

You are indeed Praiseworthy and Glorious. (O Allah) Grant favors to Muhammad and the members of his household

as You did grant favors to the members of the household of Abraham, indeed You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.

O Allah, be pleased with the Rightly-Guided Caliphs (Khulafaa Ar Rashedeen), the guided leaders,

Abou Bakr Ash Sheddeeq, dan Omar Al Farouq, dan Othman Zeen Nuraene, dan Abou Hasanain Ali.

O Allah, be pleased with all of the companions (of the Prophet), the taabe'een (the followers of the companions),

and all of those who follow them with good conduct till the Day of Resurrection,

and confer upon them Your favor and Your generosity, O the most Merciful of the merciful.

O Allah, empower Islam and the Muslims, O Allah, support those who support Your religion,

Your Book, the sunnah of Your Prophet, Muhammad shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

O Allah, support our oppressed Muslim brothers at anywhere they are,

O Allah, be the Helper, the Supporter, the Protector, and the Sustainer for them,

O Allah, send Your punishment upon the enemies of Your religion, indeed, they will not cause failure to You.

O Allah, secure us in our countries and amend our leaders and those in authority upon us,

and make dwellers of our lands fear You, have taqwa to You, and pursue Your pleasure, O the Lord of the worlds.

O Allah, grant fear upon our souls and purify them because only You can purify them best,

You are the Ally and Protector of our souls.

O Allah, we beseech You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment.

O Allah. forgive us, our parents, their parents, their offspring,

the Muslim men and Muslim women, and the believing men and believing women

both those that are still alive, and those who have passed away. Our Lord, indeed, we have wronged ourselves,

and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.

Our Lord, give us in this world [that which is] good and in the Hereafter [that which is] good and protect us from the punishment of the Fire

O the servants of Allah, remember Allah, He will remember you,

and be grateful upon His favor, He will surely increase upon you [in favor],

and the remembrance of Allah is greater. And Allah knows that which you do.
