A Short Lecture: The Virtues of Supplications
I start in the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful,
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe.
May Allah confer His salutation and peace upon the best mankind among Prophets and Messengers,
Our leader, Muhammad, and his family and all of his companions.
Imam Nawawi -May Allah bestow His mercy upon him- in his book ''Riyadu As Salehin'' said,
''Chapter The Virtues of Du'a (Supplications)''
The Commands to Supplicate in Al Qur'an
Allah, the Exalted, says, "Call upon Me; I will respond to you." (Al Ghafir: 60)
He, the Exalted, also says, "Call upon your Lord in humility and privately; indeed, He does not like transgressors." (Al A'raf: 55)
And He, the Exalted, says, "And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. ...
... I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.'' (Al Baqarah: 186)
And He, the Exalted, says, ''Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil? (An Naml: 62)
Some Selected Supplications from As Sunnah
From An-Nu'man bin Bashir -May Allah be pleased with both of them-, he reported from the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam that he said, "Du'a is worship."
It was narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi and they said, ''The hadith is hasan shahih.''

It was narrated by Abu Dawud with isnad jayyid.
And from Anas -May Allah be pleased with him-, he reported that the supplication most often recited by the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam was:
"O our Lord, give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, ...
... and save us from the punishment of the Fire." (Muttafaqun alayhi)
In his narration, Muslim added and said, ''Whenever Anas make du’a for his wishes, he supplicates with that du'a, ...
... and whenever he wanted to supplicate with another du'a, he added it on that.''
From 'Ibnu in Mas'ud -May Allah be pleased with him-, he reported that the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam
used to supplicate: ''O Allah! I beseech You for guidance, piety, chastity, and contentment."
And from Tariq bin Ashyam -May Allah be pleased with him- he said,
''Whenever a man comes and embraces Islam, the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam
then teaches him shalat and directs him to supplicate with the following words:
''O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy upon me, guide me, guard me (against harm), and give me provision.''
It was narrated by Muslim and in his another narration from Tariq, he heard that
the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam, when a man came and said to him,
"O Messenger of Allah! What shall I say if I want to ask my Lord?"
He shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, "Say: 'O Allah! Forgive me, have mercy upon me, guard me (against harm), and give me provision.''
''Surely, this supplication covers the goodness for you in your worldly life and in your Hereafter."

... and set right upon my world for me in which there exists my life, ...

... and make my life for me to have more for all types of goodness, and make my death a break for me from every evil.''

'Teach me a supplication which I could recite during my shalat (prayer).'
He said, "Recite: 'O Allah! I have wronged myself with frequent wrongdoing and there is none to forgive the sins but You. ...
... So grant me Your forgiveness and have mercy on me. You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Compassionate.''' (Muttafaqun alaihi)
And in another narration it is said, "with frequent wrongdoing" and it is also narrated with "large wrongdoing"
written in Tha' with three points above it and Ba’ with one point below.
And it is better to merge between both narrations and there becomes: "O Allah! I have wronged myself with frequent and large wrongdoing, ...
... and there is none to forgive the sins but You. So grant me Your forgiveness and have mercy on me. ...
... You are the Most Forgiving, the Most Compassionate.'''
From Abu Musa -May Allah be pleased with him-, from The Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam,
