A Short Lecture: Advice on Patience

And the third advice,

with which I advise myself and all of my brothers,

is patience.

Therefore, be patient and be patient, O slaves of Allah.

Patience is a light for a muslim in the world as the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

"Patience is illumination." (Narrated by Muslim)

Patience will be a factor that leads to the great attainment in the meeting with Allah 'azza wa jalla.

Allah 'azza wa jalla decreed, (which means), "Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account." " (Az Zumar: 10)

And my advice, O brothers, is that we must be patience in obeying Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

PATIENCE UPON OBEDIENCE TO ALLAH

And we must be patient in not disobeying Allah 'azza wa jalla.

And then we must be patient in undergoing the bitterness of fate decreed by Allah 'azza wa jalla.

We must be patient in obeying Allah and persevere in doing so.

We must remind ourselves that Allah 'azza wa jalla loves this obedience

and He loves those who obey Him and He will give a good life for those who obey Him.

"Whoever does righteousness, whether male or female, while he is a believer - We will surely cause him to live a good life." (Al Ghafir: 40)

If it feels difficult for us to be obedient, we need to remind ourselves that Allah 'azza wa jalla

has made this obedience as one of the causes  to enter the Heaven,

and, indeed, He has prepared for the obedient in His Heaven

everything which has not been seen by any eyes, has not been heard by any ears, and has never come across any hearts of mankind.

If we are able to read Al-Qur'an and memorize Al-Qur'an, then that is the best of favor,

however, if we find it difficult to do so, we need to remind ourselves that Al Qur'an is the word of Allah,

and He loves people who read His word and He loves people who reflect upon His word,

and He will give magnificence for those who memorize His word, He  will raise their degrees in the world,

and Allah 'azza wa jalla will raise their degrees in the Heaven.

Such things will help ourselves and encourage ourselves to read and memorize Al-Qur'an.

When we feel that it is difficult to attend the congregation of prayer, we need to remind ourselves that Allah loves it,

He loves people who do so and it is a way to the Heaven,

and so are other kinds of obedience.

PATIENCE UPON REFRAINING FROM DISOBEYING ALLAH

And we must be patient in not disobeying Allah especially when the soul,

which always urges to commit evil-doing, invites us to disobedience,

and when ٍSatans among Jinn and mankind urge us to disobedience,

invite us to disobey Allah 'azza wa jalla,

Remind ourselves that, indeed, Allah sees us, Allah listens to our speaking,

we must feel ashamed because Allah sees us when we are committing sins.

We must feel ashamed because Allah listens to us when we are committing sins during our speaking.

And we must remind ourselves that Allah threatens evildoers with the Hellfire

in which heat reaches its very peak.

We must remind ourselves that, indeed, we will be standing before Allah 'azza wa jalla

and Allah will be talking to us and He will be questioning us about all of our sins.

Which words are we going to utter in reply to our Lord's questions subhanahu wa ta'ala?

"There is none among you, but Allah will be talking to him directly ...

... without any interpreter between Allah and him. ...

... He looks at his right and sees nothing except deeds which he has done, ...

... and he then looks at his left and sees nothing except deeds which he has done, ...

... then he looks ahead and sees nothing except the Hellfire.'' (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

Allah 'azza wa jalla in the Day of Judgment will account all deeds of His slaves.

Among them, there is a man to whom Allah will conceal him from any sight of other people

then He will say to him, (which means) "Do you remember this sin? Do you remember that sin? Do you remember this and that?"

Imagine that, O the slaves of Allah,  indeed, Allah is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might, and the Compeller.

In the Day of Judgment, He will be questioning you about all of the sins that you have enjoyed in the world,

That is the condition, so remind yourselves about that.

Because by doing so, it can prevent you from disobeying Allah

and help you to be patient not to disobey Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala.

PATIENCE UPON DECREED FATE OF ALLAH

We must be patient upon the bitterness of fate,

because Allah 'azza wa jalla has decreed good fate and bad fate upon us.

When a kind of disasters comes to strike us, we should be patient with such a bad fate since the very beginning.

The Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam passed by a woman

who was crying in the grave of her child or her relative,  then the Messenger of Allah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

"Fear of Allah and be patient."  She replied, "Be away from me!"

"Indeed, you have never felt the disaster which is striking me."

And then the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam left her alone and went away.

And when she was informed that the man was the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam

she hurriedly left her place and ran after the Messenger of Allah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam

until she found him in his house and then she apologized to him, saying,

"O the Messenger of Allah, I did not know that it was you,  O the Messenger of Allah, I did not know that it was you."

Then the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said to her,  "The true patience is in the first strike." (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

We must be patient upon the fate of Allah and we have to be patient upon the bad fate

because we really understand that Allah is ever Knowing and Wise,

all slaves belong to Allah and He is our Lord who does upon us what He intends

Exalted and High is He.

We must be convinced that, indeed, He will not decree anything except with wisdom beyond it.

We are patient upon the fate of Allah because One who tests us with disaster is One who has given us all of the favors.

We are patient upon the bitterness of fate because we are expecting the reward from Allah 'azza wa jalla.

So we must be patient in obeying Allah, we must be patient in not disobeying Allah, and we must be patient in undergoing bad fate from Allah in order that Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala is pleased with us.
