A Short Lecture: Bid'ah, A Rejected Worship

The Messenger of Allah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam had taught us that Allah will not accept a worship

except that it is based upon a command coming from the Messenger of Allah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

He shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "Whosoever does ibadah which we have not commanded, will have it rejected.'' (Narrated by Muslim)

And he shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam used to repeat on his pulpit within his speeches, the following sentences,

"Indeed, every innovation (in the matter of religion) is bid'ah and every bid'ah is going misguided, ...

... and every misguidance is in the Hellfire." And the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam also taught us

Being Steadfast and Acting upon Sunnah are Salvation from Disunity

that, indeed, the safety from the trial and salvation from disunity can only be achieved by holding fast to the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

And there is no way out for this ummah from disunity among them except by returning back to the Sunnah of the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

therefore, some early (salaf) scholars said, "Indeed, Sunnah is like the ark of Noah."

And the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

"Verily, whoever among you lives after me, he will face great controversy, ...

... so you must hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs who guide (to the right way), ...

... hold it fast and cling to it with your molar teeth stubbornly." (Narrated by Abu Dawud)

O my brothers, nowadays, we have seen great controversy among muslims.

We have seen so many sects and groups that each of them claims that they are upon the truth and they invite people toward their belief.

Which one is the salvation? Which one is correct? And which one is upon the truth? Which one is Firqatun Najiyah (The Saved Sect)?

The Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam had explained that to us with words,  "You must hold fast to my Sunnah."

It implies that the salvation is upon the Sunnah of the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

With which understanding? With the understanding of the early pious (As Salaf As Salih) -May Allah be pleased with them-

So that the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,  "So you must hold fast to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs who guide (to the right way), ...

... hold it fast and cling to it with your molar teeth stubbornly."

Merely a Good Intention is not Enough

O my brothers, a good intention alone in doing newly-innovated worship (bid'ah) cannot remove the evil of that bid'ah

and will not change the status of the deed as bid'ah.  How many of people among muslims who practice bid'ah, who,

when we prohibit them from doing that bid'ah, they will say, ''Our hearts are pure and our intentions are good.''

"We want to worship Allah, we want to be close to Allah."

"Why do you prohibit us from worshiping Allah?"

We say to them, "By Allah, we don't mean to prohibit you from worshipping Allah, ...

... however, we would like to forbid you from the plot of satan." O slaves of Allah, take a look at the story of the three companions of the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

They came to the Prophet's house shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam to ask about his worship and then they were informed about it.

As if they thought that it was very little but it did not mean that his worship shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam was really little,

however, they said, "Indeed, the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam has been forgiven for his earlier and later sins, ...

... meanwhile, we have too much sin." And then one of them said, "I will pray for the whole night without sleeping.''

Meaning I will have optional night prayer and I will never sleep at night. The second man said, "If so, I will not marry any woman."

And the third man said, "If so, I will not stop from observe fasting." Meaning I will have fasting every day and I will never stop forever.

The Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam then came out to meet them and said,

"Are you the ones who said so and so?" They replied, "Yes, we are."

The Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "Verily I perform the night prayer, but I have some sleep too, I observe fast but I suspend it too, and I also marry women. ...

... Whosoever turns away from my Sunnah, he will have no relation with me.'' (Narrated by Muslim) Allahuakbar, O slaves of Allah!

Whoever Turns Away from His Sunnah, He Has no Relation with Him

If those who practice bid'ah want to reflect upon this hadith, we will stop practicing bid'ah.

Because the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said," Whosoever turns away from my Sunnah, he will have no relation with me." (Narrated by Muslim)

To whom did he say so? To the three companions of him,  they were among the companions of the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

And their intentions were good but they wanted to add more from what the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam had exemplified,

therefore the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said, "Whosoever turns away from my Sunnah, he will have no relation with me." (Narrated by Muslim)

And everyone who practices bid'ah  belongs to those whom the Prophet shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam mentioned in his speaking,

"Whosoever turns away from my Sunnah, he will have no relation with me." (Narrated by Muslim)

O slaves of Allah, it is our obligation, isn't it? To instruct people to follow only the Messenger of Allah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam

and forbid them from practicing bid'ah? By Allah, indeed, we truly love the ummah of Muhammad shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam

and we are afraid if our relatives are infected by this kind of bad habit and trapped in this plot of Satan,

and then practice deeds which Allah, the Entirely Merciful, hates because undoubtedly Satan is very fond of bid'ah

and it evokes the anger of the Entirely Merciful, Ar-Rahman. So that's why an early scholar said, "Bid'ah is more beloved to Satan than wickedness."

Bid'ah is more beloved to Satan than wickedness, therefore, O my beloved brothers, it is obligatory for us to solely follow the Messenger of Allah

shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

We must remind our beloved people, societies, and anyone who claims to belong to Islam

about this newly-invented bid'ah. There is no goodness, no salvation, no illumination, and no unity

except by following examples taught by the Messenger of Allah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam.
